Welcome to NIKU’s World Heritage lunch!
On 14. March NIKU hosts an open lunchtime lecture where Herdis Hølleland and Jessica Phelps will present their recent World Heritage research.
Drawing on records from Norwegian governmental archives, Hølleland and Phelps explore the intrastate tensions of the ratification process (1972-1976), the first years as an observing state party (1977-1982) and Norway’s first tenure on the World Heritage Committee (1983-89).
Glimpses from the World Heritage committee
The period provides important glimpses into the early politicking of the World Heritage Committee and the rise of Norway as a spokesperson for scientific-professional decision-making and conservation good power.
