Adaptive Reuse and Transformation of the Built Environment

NIKU provides cultural heritage advice on maintenance, restoration, upgrading, adaptive reuse, and transformation of existing buildings, cultural heritage- and building environments.

Continued use of existing buildings is climate and environmentally friendly, and an important part of the circular economy. Adaptive reuse of buildings is often more sustainable than demolishing and building new. In addition, the building stock with associated outdoor spaces can represent cultural heritage values worthy of protection.

NIKU can contribute by identifying qualities and characteristics that should be preserved and have the potential to be further developed through transformation and adaptive reuse.
