Stephanie Backes is a painting conservator (NKF-N) and has been employed at NIKU’s Trondheim office since April 2025.
She completed her education at HAWK in Hildesheim, Germany in 2005.
Backes has extensive experience in the examination and conservation/restoration of painted surfaces, including paintings on canvas and panels made of various materials (wood, metal, etc.), polychrome sculpture, and altarpieces. Her main areas of work at NIKU are condition assessments, conservation projects, and professional advice related to preventive conservation. Additionally, Backes focuses on work with value preservation plans and emergency preparedness.
In Norway, Backes has previously worked at Nordland County Municipality, the Nordland Museum Foundation, and as the general manager and practicing painting conservator in her own company.
Since 2021/2023, Backes has been involved in the boards of both the Nordic Conservators Association Norway (NKF-N) and ICOMOS Norway. She represents NKF-N in the National Forum for Emergency Preparedness and Salvage of Art and Cultural Heritage (FORK).
