Cultural historical value assessment of the Old Town Hall in Mjøndalen

NIKU has carried out a cultural historical value assessment of the Old Town Hall in Mjøndalen. The assessment was done in relation to the regulation of the Town Hall Quarter.

The purpose was to assess cultural heritage values that may be desirable to preserve. The town hall is centrally located in the towncape and has been an important identity-building structure for the former Nedre Eiker municipality. It consists of a construction phase from 1956 and an extension from 1967, and is part of a larger building complex with several buildings for municipal administration. All the buildings are designed by the same architect.

The complex represents the development of the welfare state and the buildings’ detached location is typical of post-war functionalism. The fact that the town hall is surrounded by a park also shows the building’s status as a public representation building.
