NIKU has expertise in environmental monitoring of buildings.

Environmental monitoring is conducted with different purposes and different methods. We develop indicators and systems for long-term monitoring, and work with research projects that provide opportunities for developing high-tech methods.

We perform monitoring at an overall level (loss, change, and condition of buildings), as a policy basis for cultural heritage management, and monitoring at a detailed level, in order to detect decay phenomena in buildings. In collaboration with the conservation department, NIKU also offer detailed monitoring at microscope level of surfaces and building details.
