Most ruins are exposed to the forces of nature. They can be very different and have often previously been preserved with different materials. Ruins are important cultural relics that must be communicated and arranged for an audience.
NIKU offers archival studies, building archaeological investigations, documentation, surveying, condition analyses, damage assessments, and proposals for measures. Documentation and measurement of ruins is conducted both manually and digitally by scanning, alternatively by rectification of photographs.
Ruins are often a combination of original and later materials. Conservation of ruins often involves documenting what is original and finding the causes and consequences of previous restorations. Necessary measures must be taken without weakening the authenticity of the ruins.
