Image – based modeling
NIKU undertakes most types of dissemination and documentation projects. In our work, we combine the best of photogrammetry, laser scanning, and traditional documentation of cultural heritage

Image-based modelling is increasingly common in the documentation of cultural heritage. Although we master laser scanners, advanced photography, photogrammetry, drone recordings, etc., it is our knowledge of cultural heritage that allows us to deliver quality. We simply ask the right questions.
We have experience documenting historical objects, archaeology out at site, ruins, historic buildings, or entire cultural landscapes. Each project is unique, and one method alone cannot always provide all the answers.
Therefore, we combine the best of various documentation techniques, from tape measures to lasers, drones, and satellite recordings.
Advanced documentation is not only efficient and cost-saving, but it also offers many possibilities. Here are some:
- Backup in the form of digital files that can serve as a basis for reconstructing lost cultural heritage
- Studies of changes over time by conducting documentation at regular intervals
- Visualisation and dissemination of cultural heritage
- Detailed mapping of damages
- Comparison of cultural heritage before and after restoration/conservation
Image-based modelling can also be done in combination with other documentation of buildings and structures.
