See examples of our digital projects

NIKU's Department of Digital Archaeology works with various digital methods aimed at research and documentation of cultural heritage from both older and newer historic periods. See and explore the department's diverse work here.

NIKU has selected a handful of exciting projects that can now be explored in an interactive map. These projects represent the broad range of tasks we perform and demonstrate our ability to deliver high-quality results in digital archaeology.

HAVE A LOOK AT WHAT WE DO! (examples in Norwegian, but the pictures speak for themselves)

Over a 10-year period, NIKU has built a dedicated department specializing in the use of digital methods to register, document, and monitor cultural heritage. The department conducts research and has expertise in a wide range of techniques, solving a variety of tasks for cultural heritage owners, museums, and cultural heritage management.

Expertise in Digital Methods

NIKU’s broad cultural expertise is combined with our extensive experience in using various digital methods. Traditional registration, documentation, and drawing techniques are combined with a visual, spatial, and digital 3D world. We use techniques such as terrestrial laser scanning an airborne laser scanning (LIDAR), image-based modelling (photogrammetry), and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). In archaeological geophysical surveys, we use ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometer.

We perform small and large tasks both in and outside of Norway

We undertake a variety of tasks in the form of assignments or in research contexts. These vary in form, type, scale, and geographical spread. We carry out 3D documentation of cultural-historical objects, integrated and mobile artworks, buildings, building environments, and entire cultural landscapes, as well as archaeological geophysical surveys in both rural and urban areas. In some projects, we reconstruct and build up the cultural heritage in 3D. Our projects range from large to small scales, and we work both in and outside of Norway.
